My Review of Sureflap Microchip Pet Door

The Sureflap microchip pet door is larger than all the other microchip pet doors and is suitable for small to medium dogs as well as cats. Make sure you check our sizing comparison chart to be sure! And I must also say that Sureflap customer service is fantastic, they really are very helpful. So read on for my review of the Sureflap microchip pet door.Sureflap Microchip Pet Door

If you’re looking to buy a microchip cat flap, here are the best microchip cat flaps for piece and mind for you and your pets. Also here is the Sureflap microchip pet door.

Sureflap microchip pet door use

Like all microchip cat flaps, your pets’ microchips are scanned by the microchip pet door and this allows selective entry, which is fantastic. It stops strays entering your home, spraying on your walls and harming your pets. At the same time your pets can come and go as they please without you having to let them in and out.

The Sureflap microchip pet door also has a really useful feature, called ‘Curfew’ mode. This allows you to lock the pet door for certain times, keeping your pets indoors.

In some cases your pet’s microchip may have moved and this may not be read by the scanner. In this case you can buy a set of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tags that can be fitted to a collar. The tags are read by the scanner just like the microchips. Alternatively, you can just get your pet re-chipped for about £20.

Almost all microchips are recognised, which is great because it means your cat or dog will almost certainly be able to use it. Only numbers starting ‘000’, ‘010’ and ‘020’ won’t work, but all other 9, 10 and 15 digit microchips will work.

Locking

The Sureflap microchip pet door has four way locking, which means you can choose between all four combinations of entry and exit for complete control. These combinations are unlocked in – unlocked out, unlocked in – locked out, locked in – unlocked out and locked in – locked out.

Using the Sureflap microchip pet door

Installing the Sureflap microchip pet door takes a little bit of DIY, just like any other cat flap, so if you are after any guidance check out the videos on this site for installing through brick, installing through uPVC and wood and installing through glass, or if you are after a professional cat flap fitter. Fitting the Sureflap microchip cat flap is pretty straightforward, although it would be made easier if Sureflap provided a template that could be used to stick on to your door, so you knew where to cut out.sureflap-microchip-pet-door-3

It is best to set up the Sureflap microchip pet door before you have fitted it, and it is really easy to register your pets with the microchip pet door. Just put the microchip pet door into ‘Learn’ mode and place one of your pet’s favourite treats underneath the scanner. Once your pet goes for their treat, their microchip can be read. Here is some more guidance on setting a microchip cat flap up.

You may need to be a bit patient teaching your pet how to use the pet flap for a couple of weeks, especially if they have not used a cat flap before. They may find that the clicking of the locking mechanism spooks them a little. Here is help on how to teach your pet to use a microchip cat flap.

Just make sure your pet can fit through the microchip pet flap before you buy it! The smallest dimension of the pet door is 17cm high and 18cm wide. Have a look at our sizing comparison table to see how it compares against other models.

Power

You can put this pet door anywhere, it uses 4 C batteries and doesn’t need to be plugged into the mains. This means no mains and no cable to trip over. This is so fantastic, I wish all electronic pet doors and cat flaps were like this! You could use this microchip pet door anywhere around the house, in a child proof stair gate or a outdoor pet shelter. The batteries will last for about a year.

Aesthetics

The Sureflap microchip pet door has a similar appearance to the other Sureflap microchip cat flaps. I think the white plastic really suits uPVC doors and glass windows and looks alright against brick and wood. Either way I wouldn’t be too worried about its appearance, although it’s only available in white.

  1. Now this is a cool idea! I’ve been looking for a door for my dog, Montego, and haven’t been sure what to do. Gonna look at their site and see if there’s a good fit for me. Thanks for sharing this!

    1. Hi Danielle, thanks for getting in touch! Let me know if you have any questions I could help you with, thanks Sean

    1. I’m not sure you’d be able to get a pet door that size, certainly not with microchip technology. Obviously if you’re going to get one that size you would need to be able to lock it at night or when you’re out, thanks Sean

      1. Yes! The petWALK pet doors are suitable for large and medium dogs. They are microchip and RFID activated. Best of all, they are burglar-proof with a fully locking motorised door. Also, they are airtight and fully insulated – so no draughts. Perhaps Sean, you could include the petWALK in your next review?

  2. Finally a review that can help people to understand more about this technology, and the best choice product for every pet owner needs. I love it! Thanks for the this useful review. I hope more people who needs this find this post.

  3. This is awesome. Is there any indicators on this to let you know when the batteries are getting low? I would hate to have my dog get stuck outside because I didn’t realize it was out of power

    1. Hi Von, thanks for getting in touch! You control the Sureflap Microchip Pet Door from the cat flap itself. I have heard of people using applets from the site http://www.IFTTT.com to record when their cat comes in through their microchip cat flap or if they want a meal! Thanks Sean

  4. That is a great, high-end design and not having strays come into the house is a GREAT feature lol thanks a lot for the review! Do these ship to the USA?

  5. I bought this as was getting unwanted cat don’t know how it was getting in as have garden cat proofed trouble was could not get out so bought a sureflap microchip cat flap my cats are terrified of it it’s the loud clicking when they try to get in so they back off and just sit crying to be let in tied the food encouragement just ignoring them hopping eventually they will get so desperate they would use it to no available wish I had never bought it my cats are ragdolls

    1. HI Julann, thanks for getting in touch. The short answer is you need to be patient and reward your cats for using the microchip cat flap. If it really is the sound of the mechanism that is putting them off, try playing some games near the microchip cat flap and keep setting the mechanism off so they keep hearing it and associate it with something positive. The name of the game is to be patient and to incentivse your cats to use the microchip cat flap. I have also written a short piece about this here – <http://topcatflaps.co.uk/learning-use-microchip-cat-flap>. Hope that helps and let me know how it goes. Thanks Sean
