The Sureflap microchip cat flap is probably the most popular microchip cat flap on the market and will not let you down, it certainly has not let me down! And I must also say that Sureflap customer service is fantastic, they really are very helpful. So read on for my review of the Sureflap microchip cat flap.

Sureflap microchip cat flap use
Like all microchip cat flaps, your pets’ microchips are scanned and this allows selective entry, which is fantastic. It stops strays entering your home, spraying on your walls and harming your pets, whilst they come and go as they please without you having to let them in and out.
In some cases your pet’s microchip may have moved and this may not be read by the scanner. In this case you can buy a set of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tags that can be fitted to a collar and are read by the scanner like a microchip. Alternatively, you can just get your pet re-chipped for around £20.
Almost all microchips are recognised, which is great because it means your cat or dog will almost certainly be able to use it. Only numbers starting ‘000’, ‘010’ and ‘020’ won’t work, but all other 9, 10 and 15 digit microchips will work.
Locking
The microchip cat flap has four way locking, which means you can choose between all four combinations (unlocked in – unlocked out, unlocked in – locked out, locked in – unlocked out and locked in – locked out) of entry and exit for complete control.

Using the Sureflap Microchip Cat Flap
It is best to set up the Sureflap microchip cat flap before you have fitted it, and it is really easy to register your pets with the microchip cat flap. Just put the microchip cat flap into ‘Learn’ mode and place one of your pet’s favourite treats underneath the scanner so their microchip can be read. Here is some more guidance on setting up a microchip cat flap.
You may need to be a bit patient teaching your pet how to use the pet flap for a couple of weeks, especially if they have not used a cat flap before and they may find that the clicking of the locking mechanism spooks them a little. Click here for help on how to teach your pet to use a microchip cat flap.
Just make sure your pet can fit through the microchip pet flap before you buy it! The smallest dimension of the cat flap is 12cm high and 14cm wide. Have a look at our sizing comparison table to see how it compares against other models.
Power
The great thing about this microchip cat flap is you can put it anywhere! It takes 4 AA batteries, so doesn’t need to be plugged into the mains and won’t be affected by any power cuts. You could obviously have it anywhere around the house, but also for entry into an outdoor pet house or for a homemade feeder that you can move around without having an annoying cable getting under your feet.
Aesthetics
Depending on what sort of door, wall or window you fit this microchip cat flap into, it is probably going to look great, as you can tell from the photos! The white suits glass and white doors best, but will be no eye sore against brick or timber. Aside from white, the microchip cat flap also comes in brown and the plastic shape of the frames is a more pleasing design than some of its competitors. Check out the Sureflap microchip cat flap in brown!
On a side note, there is a brush seal between the frame and the door to keep out those pesky drafts!
Conclusion
I would definitely recommend buying the Sureflap Microchip Cat Flap. It may not have some of the additional features of other models, but it is easy to set up, looks great and gives you great piece of mind about your pets’ safety and well being!

Great review, and it looks really nice. how long 4 AA batteries will last?
Can I expect to last around 2 weeks?
Hi Furkan, thanks for getting in touch! The batteries should last a bit longer than that, around a year 🙂 thanks Sean
This is a really cool device and pretty genius by whoever invented this. I do see one main issue.
I was always under the impression you either have an indoor cat or an outdoor cat. I always thought it was one or the other for how your cat lives. Does this device change the game and the way your cat is allowed to live?
Hi Kurtis, thanks for your comment. If you wanted to have an indoor cat, then there would be no need for a microchip cat flap, obviously 🙂 If you have a cat you would like to keep indoors and another you let outside, then I would recommend the Sureflap Dualscan cat flap, which scans your pet both ways through the microchip cat flap. Here’s my review for the Sureflap Dualscan cat flap http://topcatflaps.co.uk/sureflap-dualscan-cat-flap/ 🙂 Thanks Sean
I had no idea there was such technology behind some cat and doggie doors! Wow! Nicely done.
Hi Eric, thanks for getting in touch. Yeah, these microchip cat flaps are great! The Sureflap microchip cat flap is probably the most popular on the market. Sureflap have such great customer service and microchip cat flaps offer pets such great freedom and safety! Thanks Sean
Hi thanks for sharing this great review. This is a fantastic invention. Hats off to the designer. My wife has been wanting to get another kitten to join our cat we have had for years. This fixes my issue straight away as I didn’t want to restrict my cat from going outside until the kitten was ready, this is perfect. Thanks again
Hi Graham, glad to see you know the value of the Sureflap Microchip cat flap! If you are looking to keep the kitten indoors for a bit and let your adult cat out on, have a look at my review for the Sureflap Dualscan cat flap, http://topcatflaps.co.uk/sureflap-microchip-pet-door/. The Sureflap Dualscan cat flap scans both ways, so stops strays coming in and your kitten going out, selectively. Thanks Sean
WOW!! I am a cat owner and all of them are chipped and I have never heard of this product and had no idea anything like this existed! I think that people tend to forget how devastating it can be to many people to lose a pet. My cats are indoor cats and I worry all of the time that my kids are going to leave a door open and let them out and I may or may not ever see them again. This product is amazing and although we can’t ever predict everything, this takes some of that fear off. Thank you for sharing this information and I love this product!
Hi Tatiana, glad to see you can see how great these microchip cat flaps are and well done on getting your cats microchipped! I personally am all about letting cats outside where possible and these microchip cat flaps allow that but still with the safety that your cat can get in at any time, but strays are kept out. Thanks Sean
The top is cut off just to let you know but other than that this post is very informative. It is a lot of information though and I do not have the time to read it all but of what I read it was a good post. I enjoyed it, thank you so much for creating this.
Hi Cathy, thanks for the heads up! Sean
This is a pretty cool idea. I used to live in a city where cats were everywhere and some residents complained about stray cats going inside their homes and made a mess everywhere. I wish this technology existed then.
Thank you!
Hi Udoh, the benefits of these microchip cat flaps are real! Stray cats can be a real annoyance and this Sureflap Microchip Cat Flap is a great microchip cat flap, thanks Sean
What a great idea. Good comprehensive review, however the price isnt showing currently.
Hi Penny, thanks for getting in touch! I will bear that in mind, thanks Sean
How long does it take to train my cat to use the Superflap? I guess I can use it for my chihuahua also.
Hi Trevor, great question! It would take roughly two weeks to train your cat or chihuahua to use it, thanks Sean
What e revolutionary way for a cat to use a cat flap. The old manual style ones were no good at stopping stray cats coming through, which happened when we last had a cat flap. But this digital version seams the perfect answer so as to be used by your cat only.
Hi Andrew, exactly! These microchip cat flaps, like this Sureflap one, are great at keeping out strays, thanks Sean
I never knew there was such a device as a cat flap! Much better than a dog door! But it looks so small. Can cats actually get through it? The one in the video didn’t look like he could fit!
Hi Sandra, haha, cats can definitely fit through them! 🙂 Microchip cat flaps come in different sizes and you should check before you buy. If your cat could not fit through this Sureflap Microchip Cat Flap, you could have a look at the Sureflap Microchip Pet Door, which I have written a review (http://topcatflaps.co.uk/sureflap-microchip-pet-door/) about. Thanks Sean
I’ve already got a cat flap in a double glazed door. The glaziers made a rectangle hole to fit the rubbish cat flap they fitted, we keep getting strays in so want a microchip one. Should they have made a round hole in the glass instead of rectangle, as all the different makes of cat flaps state a diameter glass cut out size?? I’ll be really annoyed if they have cut it out wrong, as now we can’t seem to find any cat flap that would fit! Thanks
Hi Jo, thanks for getting in touch. There should be no issue with a rectangular hole as long as the microchip cat flap can fit through it, so check the dimensions of the hole against the microchip cat flap. One thing that might be an issue is that the holes in your double glazed door might not line up with the screw holes of your new microchip cat flap. Hope that helps! Thanks Sean
