My Review of Cat Mate Microchip Cat Flap

This is my review of the microchip version of the Cat Mate cat flap, so if you are trying to buy a cat flap, this is the post for you. The Cat Mate Microchip Cat Flap will not let you down. It works just like other microchip cat flaps, by reading your pet’s microchip and allowing them to enter, whilst denying to those that do not have a microchip registered by the microchip cat flap. What is also great is Cat Mate offer a three year guarantee on their products!

Buy your microchip reading Cat Mate cat flap to give you and your pets piece of mind.

Microchip cat flap use

Just like other microchip cat flaps, this Cat Mate cat flap allows selective entry by reading your pet’s microchip. This means your pet can come and go as they please, without the worry of stray pets entering your home. Also you don’t need to open the door to let your pet in or out.

If your cat or dog is not already microchipped, I would recommend getting them microchipped. It only costs about £20, can be carried out by your vet. Also it and means your pets can be identified if they get lost. Up to 30 cats can be registered for each microchip type Cat Mate cat flap and it is best to register your pets before you install the Cat Mate cat flap. Learn more about getting your pet microchipped.

You can also buy a tag for your pet’s collar, which can be read by the automatic cat flap. This could be a useful option for you, but personally I am not too keen on my cat having a collar.

Locking

The microchip cat flap has four way locking, which means you can choose between all four combinations (unlocked in – unlocked out, unlocked in – locked out, locked in – unlocked out and locked in – locked out) of entry and exit for complete control.

Using this Cat Mate cat flap

Installing the Cat Mate microchip cat flap does not take much DIY at all. If you are after any guidance check out the videos on this site for installing through installing through brick, installing through wood and installing through glass, or if you are after a professional cat flap fitter. If you are going to install the cat flap, there are also an adapter kit you can buy. This is really useful when fitting the microchip cat flap through glass panes or brick walls. When installing through a brick wall there is a tunnel liner as well.

Cat Mate cat flap

It is best to set up the Cat Mate microchip cat flap before you have fitted it, and it is really easy to register your pets with the microchip cat flap. Just put the microchip cat flap into ‘Learn’ mode and place one of your pet’s favourite treats underneath the scanner so their microchip can be read. Here is some more guidance on setting up a microchip cat flap.

You may need to be a bit patient teaching your pet how to use the pet flap for a couple of weeks, especially if they have not used a cat flap before and they may find that the clicking of the locking mechanism spooks them a little. Click here for help on how to teach your pet to use a microchip cat flap.

Just make sure your pet can fit through the microchip pet flap before you buy it! The smallest dimension of the cat flap is 15cm high and 14.4cm wide. Have a look at our sizing comparison table to see how it compares against other models.

Power

This electronic Cat Mate cat flap is powered by 4 x AA batteries. This is great as it means it is portable and can powered anywhere. You do not need to worry about connecting it to the mains. You could use it for an outdoor pet shelter or a portable cat box. What is really useful is that, an LED indicator will signal when the batteries need replacing. This means you can do so before they run out of charge all together.

Aesthetics

This Cat Mate cat flap has a relatively streamlined design and is not at all obtrusive on the eye. It comes in white or brown, which would really blend in well with uPVC or timber doors, brick walls or glass windows.

  1. Oh. My. Word! What a BRILLIANT idea! This is the first time I’ve heard of a microchip cat flap. And it can be fitted on glass doors! Fantastic! Finally, a solution to our problem. We must be giving our cat tasty food because when we get up during the night there’s invariably another cat, sometimes two, in the house with ours. The amazing thing is she seems to invite them in! Oftentimes we’ve found her lazing around on the couch with her mates. It’s a wonder she doesn’t switch on the TV and fetch them a drink while she’s at it. My only concern though, should we restrict access, will we be ruining her social life?

    1. Hi Lauren, thanks for getting in touch! Yeah well if you ever get bored of feeding two or three cats then a microchip cat flap will definitely help! You can always set it to unlock and let visitors in, if your cat’s social life does suffer 🙂 thanks Sean

  2. This is incredible. If my pets go out a lot I don’t have to worry about constantly checking if they are back or not. Then the best part is that they can enter and other animals can’t. This is truly a gem of a product for us pet lovers. Thanks.

    1. Hi Ronnie, exactly! That’s the great thing about these microchip cat flaps, like the Cate Mate one reviewed here. Thanks for getting in touch, Sean

  3. I can’t believe I’ve never heard of this but it is a brilliant idea! I have heard nightmare stories from friends who have cats that have a regular cat flap who have found other cats or even different animals in their house so I can see how important this is!!!

    1. Hi Jamie, thanks for getting in touch and tell your friends about this microchip cat flap! Thanks Sean

  4. Sean,
This is such a great item if you have outdoor/indoor cats. My wife is a cat lover but she has always had indoor cats that do not show any interest in going outside. My neighbor has a cat that wonders in our yard all the time. I am going to talk with him about the microchip cat flap.

Amazing product. Thank you for the great review,

    Marc

  5. This is a super review, didn’t realise there was a 3 year guarantee – that’s a great help and gives me reassurance that it works. The micro-chip idea is fantastic, did not even realise these products were available until i came to your site, thanks for all the useful information also on installing through your videos, thanks for sharing and showing how it’s done

    1. Hi Michael, thanks for getting in touch. Glad to see you got some value out of this and the three year guarantee definitely gives piece of mind to whoever buys it. Thanks Sean

  6. Never heard of this gadget but if it can keep your pets safe I’m all for it. Very interesting but I think it can help a lot of people feel at ease if they let their cats out. Back in the day cats used to roam rampant in my hometown but they would come home at night. Now, it seems people keep their cats in doors a lot. Not sure why but could be because of the dangers that we didn’t know about in the past. I had a friend who had a cat that climbed into a truck engine at night to keep warm. The guy started the engine in the morning and it wasn’t a pretty picture. I felt sad for the little guy. If the cat had been indoors it wouldn’t of happened. I like this new gadget!

    1. Hi David, good to hear from you! I’m a believer that cats should be allowed outdoors, even if there are unfortunate accidents like the one you mentioned, but they’re animals not toys and are meant to be outside. Microchip cat flaps like this one, give that freedom, but also help keep your cat safe as well. Thanks Sean

  7. This is a great device for the family pet. I like it because of the controlled entry so there won’t be a problem with strays. I think pets would like the freedom of going and coming. Thanks for the information.

  8. What a clever product! Thanks for writing the review, I’ve never heard of such a thing until now. I think this would be helpful in both urban and rural locations too. It’s great to see such a novel application of the technology used. Thanks again for sharing!

  9. I’ve purchased one of these to replace our existing cat flap. Our cat flap is set in glass patio doors, it was cut and installed professionally – to replace the unit will I need a professional or can they be popped in and out?

    1. Hi Hannah, I think as long as the Sureflap Microchip Cat Flap can fit inside the hole you already have this shouldn’t be too much of an issue and you could probably do this yourself. Thanks Sean

  10. Just a question. If I set curfew mode for sat 8pm and my cat is still out would he be able to come back in if he came back at 9pm? Or would he be locked out?
This would be ideal for me as I often work late

    1. Hi Sabrina, yes you can set the Cat Mate Microchip Cat Flap so it is ‘in only’ for a set period of time. This would allow your cat to go out before 8pm, but they would only be able to come in after that time. Hope that helps! Thanks Sean

  11. We have two pet mate cat mate cat flaps but one of them won’t let our cats in which is causing them some distress. We have a neighbours cat who is coming in and sleeping at our house so are not pleased that we can’t get this to work

    1. Hi Gill, thanks for getting in touch to let me know about this. I hope you get this resolved soon, I would contact Pet Mate customer service, which I am sure you have done. Sean

  12. Fantastic idea, and great when it’s working, if only it worked for any amount of time!
After installation, had the catch taped down and no batteries in for a few days for the cat to get used to it.
When installing batteries, top batteries have to be taped in to stop them jumping out.
Will NOT work with Duracell batteries.
Will work for a couple of days with Boot’s own brand batteries, then it stops working and needs to be re programmed for the cat(s).
After a couple of days, find our cat knocking on the flap wandering why he can’t get in!

    1. After persevering for a week now, having reset the device several times, have programmed my cat SEVERAL times as per instructions, and although appearing to have accepted the cat’s chip code, will NOT allow him to enter again!
Where do I go from here?

  13. We had the same problems when we first fitted two flaps for our cats. Eventually we realised that the flap was too high off the ground when our cats tried to get back in so we have had to build a little step in front of them which has cured the problem. Both cats now go in and out with no problem

  14. Have reset the device several times after failure to open for our cat.
If the chip is detected on initial approach to the flap, then the programme button to lock in that chip code is pressed, why will it not work?
Now our cat is fed up with the situation, preferring to use any other door/window to enter/leave the house, and we have taped the catch down to encourage him to use the flap again, but we are back to square one, half the cats in the street can gain entry and steal our cat’s food!
The situation is now beyond a joke, any new ideas would be appreciated.

    1. Does your flap let your cat go out but not back in again? We had to telephone the company for their advice and that was when we were told the flap could be too high so when the cats try to get back the chip is at the wrong angle. As soon as they were at the right height the flaps worked.

  15. When the programme button was pressed to accept the cat, the cat travels through slow enough under his own power for the LED to recognise the chip, in fact the LED starts to flash on recognising the cat’s chip from some distance from the cat flap, so therefore I consider the device is at the correct height.
The first time we used this method it worked OK for a day, but since then, despite clearing the memory and starting from scratch, although appearing to recognise and accept the cat’s microchip, it will not let him in again.

  16. The only reason I mentioned the height was that our flap was at the right height on the inside but not on the outside so our cats went out with no trouble but couldn’t get back in. Hope you get it sorted out

  17. To reiterate, when our cat approaches the cat flap from outside and the device detects his chip,ie.the LED starts to flash, I then press the programme button to lock in the chip details. Based on the fact that the detection device can see the cat when he walks up to it and the LED starts to flash, I would reckon that there is no problem with the height.
Our cat can then leave again, but he is not able to enter.
The flap worked for a couple of days and I thought it was great, then it failed to let him in and despite clearing the memory as per instructions and retrying, as I said, it registers the cat’s entry and I press the programme button to confirm, that’s it, after that it does not work.

  18. I agree with all those that have problems.
This is a complete rubbish device. It burns batteries like no tomorrow and is so slow to recognise the chip the poor cat gives up.
