About Top Cat Flaps

Why Top Cat Flaps?

I’m Sean Dean and I am the writer of Top Cat Flaps (TopCatFlaps.co.uk).

Since I was a kid, I have looked after and loved cats, dogs, budgies, hamsters, mice and even sheep. I would definitely consider myself an animal lover. From caring for these animals, I have learnt plenty about keeping them happy and healthy.

I especially have a soft spot for cats and love to see them out and about, exploring the world outside. Letting your cat outside, either means letting them out by opening a door, after they have been pestering you or by getting a cat flap. Cat flaps are great, your cat can come and go as they please, but it does leave your home open to intrusion from strays and other unwanted animals.

Microchip cat flaps – George’s saviour!

After doing plenty of research, I came across microchip cat flaps, which seemed to offer the best of both worlds; freedom and security. I bought one, put it in myself and after a little bit of setting up, me and George, the British Shorthair, were away.

I told plenty of my cat loving friends about my success, and after finding out they knew little about microchip cat flaps and pet doors, set about enlightening them.

This has spurred me on to create this website, Top Cat Flaps, to share my knowledge and experiences in the hope of helping you and others in buying the right microchip cat flap.

Where to buy your microchip cat flap?

There are plenty of microchip cat flaps on Amazon’s site, however the products reviewed on this site I have either bought and used myself or come highly recommended to me. These products are from brands such as Cat Mate, Pet Safe, Staywell and Sureflap. These brands include microchip cat flaps like the Cat Mate Elite Microchip Cat Flap that has timer control that allows you to control which hours your pets can use the cat flap, so they can be kept in at night.

Amazon is a great place to buy a microchip cat flap. There is plenty of choice and competitive prices from Amazon themselves and their third party sellers. Also there are plenty of delivery options, including next day delivery. This next day delivery is free, without extra cost, if you are a member of Amazon Prime.

Also Amazon take a number of steps to protect their buyer’s purchases. This include a refund and returns policy if your seller does not deliver your microchip pet door on time and as described. This gives a tremendous amount of confidence when buying on Amazon. Here are some microchip cat flaps on Amazon, and here are some reviews.

  1. George is a beautiful cat! How long did it take him to start using the Top Cat Flap by himself? It is a great invention that I would like to try, but my cat does not adjust well to any changes. I rescued her from a local shelter that labeled her “not adoptable.” They were wrong. She is the best cat in the world, but loud noise still frighten her. How loud is the motor for the Top Cat Flap?
    Thanks for your help.

    1. Hi Patty,

      Thanks for getting in touch!

Yes, George is a lovely, fluffy cat 🙂 it took him a couple of weeks to learn how to use the microchip cat flap, but it did require a bit of patience.

That’s so good of you, I’m glad you rescued your cat 🙂 the only noise to worry about is the locking and unlocking of the door. There will be a sort of clicking noise when your cat’s microchip is read by the sensor. It will ‘click’ open quite close to your cat but I wouldn’t say it was necessarily loud though.

Check the Sureflap video on this page, http://topcatflaps.co.uk/how-to-set-up-microchip-cat-flap/, as that has the unlocking mechanism shown on it.

      Thanks

      Sean

  2. I’ve heard of this before but it sounds wonderful. I currently get a lot of exercise letting my cat in and out throughout the day (and night!)
    The website is wonderful. Congrats!

  3. This is completely new to me. I’ve never heard of a cat dog, but it’s such a great idea! I get a lot of exercise letting my cat in and out throughout the day (and night!)

    Your site is great!

    1. Hi Anita, thanks for getting in touch! Well if you ever want a break from opening the door to let your cat in and out, you know where to come 🙂 thanks Sean

  4. Ah, this certainly will give us cat lovers peace of mind for our kitties in the middle of the night and while we are gone. So often some stray gets in! This fact made a door previously undesirable until now!

Thanks for great reviews, etc. Lynne

    1. Hi Lynne, yeah we all worry about our pets, they’re part of the family! Microchip cat flaps gives us the piece and mind that strays and other animals won’t get in to bother and cause undue stress to our pets. Thanks Sean

  5. i am putting a new cat flap through a brick wall and want to know how much does the tunnel need to stick out on the outside of the wall?

    1. Hi Gary, the tunnel extenders should fit inside the outer cover of the microchip cat flap. You will want the tunnel to stick out a little bit beyond the wall but not too much so it is deeper than the outside cover of the cat flap. Thanks Sean

  6. Can you help with changing an existing cat flap to a micro chip cat flap?
