These unwanted intrusions include stray cats and other animals that can cause distress and even injury to your family pets.

What is a microchip cat flap?

Microchip cat flaps work by recognising your pet’s microchip and allows passage through the cat flap. At the same time, they deny entry for pets without a microchip recognised by the cat flap. This adds a layer of security not provided by other types of cat flaps. If you are anything like me, you would do almost anything to make your pet safer.

This is level of sophistication beyond other types of cat flaps. Your pet would not need to wear a collar to have selective use of the microchip cat flap. They will also be able to come and go when they please. This allows the best of both worlds of freedom for your pet to go in and out of your home without the worry of unwanted strays, others’ pets and foxes intruding in your home. I think this is really important to let your pet, as an animal the freedom to come and go as they please.

  1. This would be very handy for my neighbor! Our cat has gone into their house using the cat-flap and got stuck! So the neighbors got home and found our cat in their house!

    1. Hi Emma,

Haha! Yeah that can’t be good for your neighbours! Just make sure they’re not feeding your cat as well! 🙂

      Good to hear from you

      Sean

    1. Hi Abubakr, thanks for getting in touch! Let me know if you have any questions I can help you with, thanks Sean

  2. We at Cat Flap Fever Industries, in the US, are getting more and more requests for this type of flap. We offer the standard type but can use this for customers S a special request. Would love to chat about your product and blending it with what we do (boards that fit in the window so no tools required to install). Please contact us back. Could be a perfect match. Like Murray vs Raonic. 😉

    1. Hi Liz, sorry I completely forgot to reply to your comment! Would love to discuss with you further what you guys are up to if you are still interested, thanks Sean

  3. When I initially commented I clicked the “Notify me when new comments are added” checkbox and now each time a comment is added I get several emails with the same comment. Is there any way you can remove me from that service? Cheers!

    1. Hi Corburt, apologies for the delay. I think you can unsubscribe to these comments in the email you get when a new comment is posted. Hope that helps! Thanks Sean

  4. Your site is awesome. I love it. And I live in a place where we still keep the window open for the cats to come and go as they please. This is a completely new idea to me.

I love cats, I have two myself and in total we have 4 on the erf.

Ever noticed that cat’s are kingly creatures?

Anyway, your site is great. Good job.

    1. Hi Marlene!

Thanks that’s really nice of you to say 🙂 Where do you live? I am very aware of their kingly-ness, we are there to serve our cats haha!

      Thanks

      Sean

  5. Sean, the microchip cat flap is a wonderful invention and has been around in Australia for a while. In fact my partner was going to design one years ago (our vet even gave us his old microchip scanner to work with). However, in tune with his nature he never got around to it. Oh dear another opportunity lost!

We have had a succession of felines and they all have reacted differently. All but one started using straight away. That one had to be pushed through it for a few days until he got the idea. Mot, one of our girls, dashed through immediately. This was in the days of no microchip flaps and we had a barrel lock inside it so we could lock it at night. One night she was late so we locked the flap just as she came barrelling at the door hitting the flap and stopping dead (not really dead but I guess she had a headache). A second girl took to it straight away but always looked like a contortionist getting through.

Now we have a homemade flap in the side of the shed so our girl Katie can get in during the day if we are away. Oscar our lone male puss had been a very compact muscly fellow when we rescued him from the bush. When desexed he retained the muscle and the girth. That’s why we have a homemade flap – so it could be made wide enough that he could get through!

However if we move, the next house will have a microchip door. Unfortunately it doesn’t appear Amazon Australia promotes these yet.

Down here in Tasmania, contrary to some people’s belief, we don’t have fox. We do however have brush tailed possums and they sit on the veranda with their pink little noses pressed to the glass door. And they watch mournfully as we eat. And they have figured out how the door slides. No entry yet but we keep that door locked at night.

This is a very informative post and website. See you around when I visit again.

    Ciao
    Helen

    1. Hi Helen, it’s so great to hear about you and your cats’ experiences with cat flaps! And all the way from Tasmania as well! Thank you so much for getting touch and I am a bit surprised you aren’t able to get a microchip cat flap from Amazon Australia. Hope the weather is nice ad warm down there, thanks Sean

  6. Wow. you are really experience and skill in this field . I will definitely come back as a point of reference when I want an information concerning this. It is so informative. Great work.
    more blessings

  7. Hi Sean,

This is a great website. I didn’t know much about cat flap before, but this sounds like a really good idea to keep other animals away. I wonder if cat flap can be buggy and at times not let your own pet inside the house.

    1. Hi Vasiliy, thanks for getting in touch! I have not really heard of any instances of microchip cat flaps not letting cats in and out when they should. Sometimes the position of the cat’s microchip between their shoulder blades can be an issue. Otherwise, I have heard that the customer service is very good, especially for Sureflap. Thanks Sean

  8. why are you using one of my pictures on your website and calling it a sure flap when in fact it’s a pet safe 4 way locking deluxe cat flap. I fitted that cat flap about 4 years ago and I’m still fitting them.
Can you please ask me next time you use one of my photo’s

    1. Hi Colin, my apologies for the mix up and using your image without your permission, which one are you talking about? Regards Sean

    1. Hi Furkan, thanks for getting in touch! I’d say that the batteries and electrical circuits are on the inside part of the microchip cat flap, to protect it from the weather.

  9. Hi Sean,

These are excellent. I know from experience that other cats and animals do tend to follow your cat through the flap. We had an instance when this black cat came into our kitchen and a big fight ensued! I like how there are a few different brand options there and you have also done reviews on each. Well done. I will check them out.

    1. Thanks for your comment, Craig! Yeah I would say there could be an issue with another cat following in with the door still open, but these microchip cat flaps are the best option I know of.

  10. Wow I had no idea this technology was available! Very reassuring to know pets are being kept safe. I have friends with outdoor cats and they may benefit from this, thanks for posting!

    1. Thanks for the comment, Alana! It’s great to keep your pets safe and let them come as go as they please.

  11. Nice to see an upgrade with such a popular cat entrance. I like that the design addresses the peeves and safety issues cloths flaps always invite lol I wonder if there are bigger versions for larger domestic cats: like a Maine Coon or British Shorthair.

  12. Hi,

This site is great! Our little Kitty is just about ready to start venturing outside and we were thinking about a cat flap. But I remember as a kid all the hassles we had with Neighbour cats ending up inside!

I knew they did the Collar type Flaps but Our kitty won’t keep her collar on so that’s not good. I didn’t know they could be Microchip activated. What a great idea. Our Kitty is already Chipped so we wil definitely be looking at getting one!

    Thanks for the great info.

  13. Hello Sean. Nice website. Very well laid out and informative. Hope your hard work is paying huge dividends. Thanks for following me. I’m following you as well.

    All the best to you,

    Randy B

  14. Very good idea to help keep unwanted animals out but still allow your pet to go outside when they want or need to. Our dog doesn’t sometimes give us a good enough hint when he wants to go out and ends up going on the floor. This may solve some of that problem. Thanks

    1. Hi Andy, thanks for getting in touch. Like you say, a pet door can let your pets go out on their own when they need to and save us, owners, a bit of hassle from time to time, thanks Sean

  15. Hi Sean
I notice you are using one of my pictures on your website. It would be nice if you had posted a comment about my company, as the picture shows up on your wall fitting cat flap page
    Cheers Colin
